How to present yourself ?

Posted in Self presentation at 15:33 by Alex

In this post, I will present you three different ways to present itself as a professionnel. You will find three examples and a critic for each.

- And you are? : In this part, he describes himself very briefly. He is writer and interaction design consultant

- Tell me more… : Here he writes his official biography with a lot of details about his professional experience. He includes also a list of his publications

- Are you for hire ? : In this part, the visitor can download his CV, his portfolio, visit his Flickr profile to see his photos, and there is also a link to “tweets”.

- So what do you do exactly? He talkes about his background and his interests

- What do you want to do ? He lists the things he wants to do which allows him to use his skills like “mentor and lead a creative team” or ”continue to understand how many things are created – from design to writing to coding – which really helps with that first point”

  • What I like :

- The website of this about me presentation is very simple, maybe too much sober but it is pleasant to see and to read and the quality of his picture is very good.

- The style of the writing is very clear and he has a lot of documents which complete his presentation, like the CV, the publications, his photos, etc.

- He added too a lot of links in order to illustrate what he is talking about.

- The fact that he divided his “about me” in five parts makes it clearer and more organised.

- A short presentation where he describes himself briefly

- Links to Interviews

- Links to Radio Shows

- Links to Professional Speaking

  • What I don’t like :

- His presentation is too short, he doesn’t give details about his experiences, his knowledge and his skills.

- His picture is too big and I think that it is dull, it is not a good contrast.

- He writes in using the 3rd person, I don’t like this style because it is too much formal.

3eme-blog

- About me : he talks shortly about him and what he studies. He is freelance consultant for web 2.0

- I do web stuff : he explains what he does with a picture

- So what exactly is it that I do? : he explains what he does with a lot of details

- Contact : we can contact him here

- Resume : he put his CV on the page

  • What I like :

- The design of the website is simple and pleasant to see and to read

- In the right side, there is another “about me” shorter, who attracts people who read his website

- The different parts of his presentation are clear and we know in detail what he does

- He explains with very simple sentences and a fun (and clear) picture what he is doing and it is very pleasant to read

  • But :

- In the first part, he talks with the 3rd person, and in the other parts, he talks with “I”. It is not a homogeneous style.

    Hey Alex,

Thanks for the analysis and your kind words!

So now I changed the wording of the first part of my “about me” page – the one that’s written in 3rd person – to “3rd person blurb” to make clear it’s what can be used if someone wants to forward some info about me to their colleagues or boss. (I was told by clients that this helps in explaining why someone inside a company proposes me as an external consultant.)

Think that helps clarifying why there is a certain incoherence in my writing?

Thanks again, and keep up the great work!

    Cheers from Berlin,
    Peter
